It shows the rail line passing very close to us.  Transport for Leigh, a community interest group, believe this provides an excellent opportunity for the re-instatement of a rail link serving our local region by way of a new interchange located in our area. We applaud plans to build a new Engineering complex and welcome all this will bring, however this development does not hinge on the small amount of extra space gained by demolition.  There is no exceptional case.\r\n\r\nSheffield City Council should have asked the University to revise their plans to integrate the Edwardian building.   The University bought the building in full knowledge of its listed status.  If unwilling to maintain it they should have investigated selling it to someone else. Many charities struggle to maintain highly listed buildings (often grade I or II*) and being made to pay an extra 20% for VAT could force some vital works to be postponed or cancelled altogether. Whilst we are sympathetic to the need for HM Government to decrease the budget the removal of zero-rated VAT on alterations to listed buildings owned by charities is a retrograde step. Not only will it bring in relatively small amounts to HM Treasury but it could force some charities to either seriously compromise their ability to serve the community or bring them a step closer to closure.
