Rejected petition Reduce cyclist road deaths by enforcement of safe overtaking by motorists.

Applying the approach taken by West Midlands Police on a national basis. When motorists endanger cyclists by getting too close (less than a metre-and-a-half) when overtaking they can be prosecuted for driving without due care and attention.

More details

Cyclists may suddenly need to avoid uneven road surfaces or obstacles like drain covers so it's important to afford them plenty of room when overtaking.

21,000 cyclists injured on Britain's roads in 2014, 113 killed.

On bikes equipped with cameras, West Midlands Police have been patrolling roads, radioing ahead to patrol cars when they film bad driving. Most offenders are given roadside advice. When motorists offend persistently they are prosecuted for driving without due care & attention.
