Rejected petition Improve the terms and conditions of employment for general practice nurses

General Practice Nurses (GPN’s) are not directly employed by the NHS and so a great deal of disparity exists amongst the pay and employment conditions offered by individual employers. Some GPN’s cannot access training and receive only statutory levels of sick pay, maternity pay and annual leave.

More details

It is suggested that a 1/3 of all nurses working in general practice plan to retire by 2020 (Cummings, 2017; QNI, 2016). Both; General Practice – Developing confidence, capability and capacity (NHS England, 2017) and General Practice Nursing (GPN) Workforce Development Plan – Recognise, Rethink and Reform (HEE, 2017), are encouraging responses, however neither address the “elephant in the room”. Pay and conditions are central to the recruitment and retention of GPN’s and must be addressed.
