Closed petition Reduce the 20% VAT rate on Public Electric Vehicle charging to 5%.

Currently the VAT rate on domestic electricity is 5%. Public EV chargers attract VAT at 20%. We want Government to reduce the VAT rate on public EV chargers to 5% in line with domestic electricity.

More details

Government policy is to move all drivers to EVs in the long term, those without home charging capacity are being forced to pay 4 times the VAT of those able to charge at home.

In order that people find EVs more attractive than fossil fuel cars Government taxation policy should look favourably towards EVs. Reducing the VAT on public charging to 5% in line with domestic charging would show joined up Government policy regarding EVs.

Electric vehicle infrastructure debated by MPs

In the last two weeks, there have been two Westminster Hall debates on electric vehicle infrastructure.

Watch the debates, read the transcripts, and access other relevant material:

What are Westminster Hall debates?

Westminster Hall is the second Chamber of the House of Commons.

Westminster Hall debates give MPs an opportunity to raise local or national issues and receive a response from a government minister. Any MP can take part in a Westminster Hall debate.

Debates in Westminster Hall take place on ‘general debate' motions expressed in neutral terms. These motions are worded ‘That this House has considered [a specific matter]'. This means that Westminster debates don’t end in a vote on a particular action or decision.
