My 1.7-tonne car driven 8,000 miles pays more than some heavier electric vehicles, for example a 2.7-tonne car doing 40,000 miles, despite causing less road wear. VED ignores mileage, weight and drive systems while taxing value and emissions covered by VAT and fuel duty.
