Petition Provide prescription charge exemption for patients on lifelong warfarin.
Warfarin is an anticoagulant drug which helps to prevent repeat strokes and blood clots. It is estimated that 1% of the UK population take warfarin. It is often prescribed short term but for those prescribed it for life there is no exemption from the prescription charge despite it being essential.
More details
If a person is prescribed lifelong warfarin, it is because the risk of future strokes or blood clots Is vastly increased by their circumstances, for example family history, genetic disorders, repeated episodes etc... A pulmonary embolism will kill one in three sufferers often with no warning. Strokes affect one person every five minutes. Therefore due to it's essential daily function of protecting the life of the patient, when prescribed lifelong warfarin should be exempt from charge.
