In the light of recent events it is now obvious that the government needs to legislate to substantially increase custodial sentences. At present the hands of the courts are tied and judges and magistrates need to be given more discretion in favour of handing out longer sentences. For murderers and rapists, life should be given and this should mean life with no parole.
