That someone who steals millions of pounds from the taxpayer or private customers may get a lesser sentence than someone who steals a few pounds worth of goods is socially divisive.

We need a simple measure that shows the impact of the crime upon society and its victims.

This is not to do with violent crime but simply to do with theft.

When sentencing for theft, fraud, tax avoidance and financial crimes; the sentence should be proportionate to the value of the crime.

In effect anyone convicted in the future should be sentenced as follows:

1 day for every £1 that can be shown to have been stolen.

For a fairer society and better justice. Let us make sentencing for theft and fraud proportionate to the level of the offence.
