Rejected petition Ban supermarkets from throwing away unsold food that can be donated to charity

Make it illegal for supermarkets to dispose of edible food that can be given to the homeless via charities. The increasing issue of food waste must be addressed more efficiently while supporting the most vulnerable individuals in our society.

WRAP (2013) estimates annual food waste of around 12 million tonnes from UK households, hospitality and food service, food manufacture, retail and wholesale sectors, of which 75% can be prevented. This had a value of over £19 billion a year, and was associated with at least 20 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.
