Making it a legal requirement to encrypt all personal data stored electronically by organisations. Either via a change to the Data Protection Act (DPA) 1998 or other means.

This is to limit the possible damage caused by data theft or loss to individuals.

The reason for the change?

As more and more of our personal data is stored electronically by organisations, the more organisations should do to protect this data from loss or theft, but unfortunately this is not always the case, as there is no legal requirement for organisations to encrypt the electronic data held by them. So a change needs to happen to help protect an individuals personal data when a loss or theft occurs.

What is personal data?

Personal data means data which can identify an individual, for example, your name, address or account details..., the Data Protection Act (DPA) 1998, describes it as "...data which relate to a living individual who can be identified - (a) from those data..."
