HS2 as planned is simply adding to the already tortuous transport system on the surface, and is yesterday's answer. Be bold and plan for 2050, and do it without disrupting hundreds of thousands of lives, and despoiling a finite resource, our countryside.

Crossrail has been a huge and successful project. Tunnelling under open countryside will be a lot easier and cheaper. What has been done for London should be equally available for the rest of the country.
