Rejected petition Pass a law banning MPs raising their pay, if there is a public sector pay freeze

Government consistently in the past has frozen the public sector pay, as part of austerity measures or for other reasons. As the same time they then go onto increase their own salary. This is a lack of integrity and should be put to a stop immediately.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for.

The Government and Parliament don’t have the power to set MPs’ pay. That power was given by Parliament to the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) in 2010, so that after 2012 MPs no longer had control over their own pay. IPSA conducted a public consultation after 2012 and decided what the salaries of MPs should be after the election.
