Important:

This petition was submitted during the 2015-2017 parliament

Rejected petition End the use of honorific titles for MPs.

MPs have a tradition of referring to eachother as 'The Right Honourable member for (constituency)". However, the wording is no longer valid. The government has proven time and time again that there is absolutely nothing honourable in their motives.

MPs must earn the title or it should be dropped.

More details

From schoolyard jeering whilst debating the gravest of matters, to allegations of necrobestiality and expenses scandals and the broken promises of protecting the NHS and tuition fees. These do not fall under any definition of "honourable" actions.

This petition was rejected

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.

Not all MPs are entitled to use the title "Right honourable". This is a title that may be used by members of the Privy Council. You can find out more about the Privy Council here:

http://privycouncil.independent.gov.uk/

Not all members of the Privy Council are MPs.

During debates, MPs refer to other MPs (if they are not members of the Privy Council) as "the honourable gentlemen/lady" or "my honourable friend".

If you would like the House of Commons to change its practice, you could start a petition asking for the use of both the terms "honourable" and "right honourable" to be ended.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
