Rejected petition Re-hold the EU referendum with a minimum voting age of 16

People currently aged 16 in the UK have just finished life defining exams, and yet were not given a say in a vote that will impact them just as much as, and in fact for longer than, everyone else.

More details

As figures published after the EU referendum showed, the age brackets that voted to leave the EU are those who are likely to have to live with the decision for fewer years. In the two years that it is estimated to take to leave, those currently aged 16 will be 18, and working towards careers, further education and other things impacted by the EU. Ultimately, they will be around the longest to deal with a decision that they did not make.

This petition was rejected

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.

The EU referendum has already taken place. It is therefore no longer possible for the franchise (the groups of people who are entitled to vote) to be changed.

If you would like the UK voting age to be lowered to 16, you might like to sign this petition instead:
