Gilenya MS pill denied by NICE

The National Institute for Health & Clinical Excellence (NICE), which advises the NHS on which treatments to provide, has issued draft guidance stating Gilenya (fingolimod) should not be made freely available on the NHS, because the treatment is not ‘cost effective’.

In clinical trials Gileyna has proved more effective than current injectable treatments.

NICE compared Gilenya to ‘best supportive care’, which is when a patient takes no medicine for their condition, to rule it was not cost effective.
NICE also failed to consider the broader social and economic benefits of medicines – like that a reduction in relapses will enable a person to remain in work for longer.

Simon added: “We’re concerned at how this decision has been reached and now strongly encourage NICE and Novartis [the makers of Gilenya] to work together to look at how the treatment can be better re-considered and evaluated.”
