Rejected petition When a Prime Minister resigns, a General Election MUST be held.

When a PM resigns with more than one year of term left, it is unfair that the British people should be governed by an unelected Prime Minister, selected only by members of their party.

This law would ensure that if a Prime Minister resigns, they effectively 'void' their party's term in office.

More details

For better or worse, the UK now finds itself needing a new Prime Minister, and it seems perverse that after so democratic (and polarising) a vote as the EU Referendum - and at an unarguably unstable period in the country's history - we should find ourselves governed by someone we have not elected, who has been chosen only by thousands (within the Conservative Party) rather than by millions of citizens in the country.
