EFTA is a free trade area and currently includes Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. It operates in parallel with the EU, and all its member states participate in the EU's single market. Norway rejected membership of the EU in national referendums in 1973 and 1995, but stayed in EFTA.
