Important:

This petition was submitted during the 2015-2017 parliament

Rejected petition Require the PM to remain in office during the fixed term of a parliament.

Failure on a given issue, e.g. EU referendum, can force a PM to resign and thus radically change the character of the government from the one elected. The current PM should remain in place and manage the situation that he started and that the people voted on.

More details

The fixed term parliament act helps maintain stability by keeping a government in place for a fixt term.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fixed-term_Parliaments_Act_2011

A prime minister should not feel honor bound to resign for a given failure. He and his Mps should be bound to rectify the failure during the period of the parliament. Internal party coup mongering would occur less if the PM and the term of the parliament were required to coincide.

This petition was rejected

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for.

The resignation of an individual Minister, including the Prime Minister, is not a decision for the Government or Parliament as a whole. It is a decision for the individual concerned. The UK Government or Parliament cannot stop a Minister resigning.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
