Rejected petition Any second Scottish referendum should be open to voters in all parts of the UK.

Independence for Scotland would have a huge impact on the rest of the country.

Nicola Sturgeon says it is undemocratic for Scotland to be dragged out of the EU against the wishes of Scottish voters. By the same token, voters across the UK should be able to vote on Scottish independence.

More details

The 23 June referendum produced a 52/48 vote in favour of Leave, while in Scotland the vote went 62/38 in favour of Remain.

The Scottish First Minister is reported as saying (Daily Telegraph, 24 June) that it was "democratically unacceptable" for Scotland to be taken out of the EU against its will.

It is equally undemocratic for Scotland to be taken out of the UK without a vote across the whole country. Voters in all parts of the UK should be able to vote on equal terms.
