According to Gingerbread, the CSA has left almost £4bn of outstanding arrears, with the DWP’s estimating only £467m is ever likely to be recovered.

According to Gingerbread's latest report, www.gingerbread.org.uk/content/2297/Missing-maintenance nearly half of single-parent families live below the poverty line and the number is increasing. Although the CMS charges for collection, it has only recovered 53% due (leaving£52.5m arrears) and less than half the eligible children getting anything. Its collection remedies are insufficient, particularly for the large number of self-employed/cash- in- hand owing parents.
