Rejected petition Create an independent regulator for politicians with power to call by-elections.

Most professionals whose actions can have significant impact on peoples lives have an independent regulator. Politicians are currently protected from meaningful sanctions as self-regulation via the parliamentary committee on standards is ineffective. The regulator needs to be independent.

Many politicians lie to and mislead the public. Many were found to have abused their expenses. In other professions this behaviour would have resulted in the regulatory body placing conditions on their practice and in serious cases preventing them from continuing to practice at all.
