With the resignation of past prime ministers, new ones have been put into office by their party voting to put a person in power.
In many instances it is a person that is unpopular by large percentages of the pop, and would never have been voted in normally.
In the last century, prime ministers that were unelected and we're never the public choices have been as follows.
Gordon Brown. John Major. James Callaghan to name a few.
In every instance bar 1 (John Major), at the next election they were voted out of office because of their unpopularity and bad policies.
There should be a law and statute to hold a general election upon a prime minister resignation.
