Single parents and sole carers face barriers to employment and social participation beyond those of parents and carers in general. In addition, caring responsibilities are not a recognised 'category' in legislation that protects individuals in vulnerable groups from discrimination and hate crimes.

Protected category status would prevent exclusion from services and employment by providing a legal right to access, which could be used, to ensure employers and service providers put in place extra adaptations for lone-caring responsibilities, which are a greater barrier than simply parenthood or caring with wider support. This would also enable legal redress against hate-speech often directed at lone parents.
