Rejected petition We believe that John Bercow should remain as Speaker of the House of Commons.

In the last week we have heard that John Bercow, who (as Speaker) has official oversight over who addresses Parliament in Westminster Hall, commented on the suitability of Pres Trump receiving that honour; we've also heard that he reported (in retrospect) how he'd voted in the referendum.

More details

We do not believe that either statement undermines the exemplary impartiality that the Speaker has demonstrated time and again in the House.

As it is the Speaker's place to vet who addresses the House in Westminster Hall, his statement - at this current point in time and given the present political situation - was wholly appropriate and can only be described as partisan by those with vested interests.

To speak retrospectively about a vote placed is not partisan, it is a statement of fact.
