Rejected petition Makaton to be part of the curriculum for children to learn from 5 upwards.

Makaton is used in preschools across the UK to help children who find it hard to communicate get what they need to say across to the teaching assistants. It should be mandatory for school age children to learn makaton to help children with complex needs find it easy to communicate with them.

More details

Children with complex needs going into mainstream school may only be able to communicate what they're thinking and feeling with makaton although them being at the right age for they're learning pathway. For example some children who have tracheostomies find it hard to learn to communicate through talking so learn to communicate with makaton and these children normally are able to attend a mainstream school as their learning is of the same capacity as a child without a tracheostomy.
