Rejected petition Increase all salaries in line with rise of minimum wage (NMW)
The NMW will rise on 1 April-17 from £7.20 per hour to £7.50 per hour of which should be fully supported. This £0.30 per hour rise is an increase of 4.17%
The UK as a whole has seen a wage increase of 2.6%, in effect bringing the gap between a NMW earner closer to one that earns more than the NMW
More details
In the three months to December-16, wages grew 2.6% on an annualised basis in the UK, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
If the NMW is increasing by 4.17%, and the UK as a whole has risen by 2.6%:
4.17% - 2.60% = 1.57%
Those earning more than the NMW generally earn more due to their employment being more valuable to an employer, whether that be by experience or skillset, and in effect those above the NMW are receiving 1.57% less of a rise than one on the NMW.
