It is currently unfair to local constituents who have taken the trouble to vote in elections that a sitting MP can join another political party mid-term without consequence even though s/he gained a majority of votes for their previous affiliation. An alternative fairer approach would be that they become Independent candidates in the remaining period until the next election.This has been enforced in Manitoba, Canada, see http://web2.gov.mb.ca/laws/statutes/2006/c01506ee.php
