Rejected petition Abolish IPP and release prisoners that have served their time.
Imagine, committing a crime when you were 25 you’ve been given a 18 years sentence. Whilst in prison nothing has been done to rehabilitate you, all of the courses that you’ve done has been lost by the prison officers and you’ve got no clear date as to when you’re coming out. You are now 50!
This petition was rejected
Why was this petition rejected?
It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.
We can't accept your petition because Imprisonment of Public Protection (IPP) was abolished as a sentence in the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012. You can see the law here:
https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2012/10/contents
Sentences in individual cases are the responsibility of the courts and decisions about releasing prisoners are taken by the Parole Board, which is independent. The Government and Parliament can't change the Parole Board's decisions.
We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
