The BBC and now even the Government websites (including this one) keep making references and promoting services such as facebook and twitter.

These are commercial (for profit) websites and the publicly owned BBC has no place helping drive traffic and business to them. There are many competing services and these public sites should either include all sites (not feasible) or refrain from mentioning them at all, people who want to use them will find them without the BBC giving out free advertising.
