Rejected petition Apprenticeship wages should be the same as the National Minimum Wage

At present (November 2011), the Apprenticeship wage stands at £2.60 an hour, where as the National Minimum Wages are as follows:

£6.08 - the main rate for workers aged 21 and over
£4.98 - the 18-20 rate
£3.68 - the 16-17 rate for workers above school leaving age but under 18 (Information from Direct.gov)

Why is the apprentice wage so low? Apprentices often have to work a full time job 30 - 37.5hours a week as well as complete a qualification, an NVQ for example.

This is cheap labour for employers and frankly an insult to those young adults who take part in these apprenticeships. The Government is trying to promote apprenticeships, the wage is a major issue and should be addressed.
