Rejected petition Unban the Iceland Christmas advert
The new Iceland Christmas advert has been banned from being broadcast in the UK by Clearcast, as it is deemed to be politically motivated. However, in actuality it is highlighting a very real issue that Orangutans are facing today. This is no different to a Charity raising awareness of a cause.
More details
Clearcast, the body responsible for vetting ads, said it was in breach of rules laid out in the 2003 Communications Act. One of the laws stipulates that a promotional campaign is prohibited if it is "directed towards a political end".
"It was a film that Greenpeace made with the voiceover of Emma Thompson"
This petition was rejected
Why was this petition rejected?
It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for.
The decision was taken by Clearcast, who are a private organisation. They preclear adverts on behalf of broadcasters before they appear on television.
You can find their statement here:
Broadcast adverts are covered by the UK Code of Broadcast Advertising. The rules on political advertising are the responsibility of Ofcom, and not the UK Government or Parliament.

You could start a new petition calling for changes to the way advertising is regulated in the UK if that is something you would like to see happen.
We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
