Rejected petition Make Paternity leave 3 full paid months with option to extend 6 months part pay
Paternity leave in the UK is limited to 2 weeks and must be taken within the month of babies’ birth. Mothers need this time for emotional and physical support wether they are recovering from minor/major surgery or if postpartum depression develops (and can affect one or both parents)
More details
Postpartum depression affects 10-15% of mothers with most cases unreported. In this, 24-50% of their partners will be affected also. Depression may not present itself until the third month after delivery.
Newborn babies sleep patterns are non existent and vary until the third month when a routine is fully established.
Some mothers require surgery, from episiotomy to c-section, and will find simple tasks like walking, going to the toilet and making meals difficult and straining

We understand you are concerned about paternity leave, but we're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do. In particular whether you want to add this to the existing options for shared parental leave and pay or to replace it with this.
