Rejected petition A by election must be called when a sitting MP resigns from their party.

In a general election many people will vote for the political party of their choice regardless of the candidate who is standing. When an MP resigns and no longer represents the voters' chosen party, a by election must be called in order to endorse the sitting MP or to elect another.
