This petition was submitted during the 2017-2019 parliament
Rejected petition Make it law that the UK must always retain a unilateral right to exit the EU.
Being bound by a backstop agreement that can not be unilaterally exited is tying the UK further to the EU but without any seat at the table.
The people voted to leave and this option must remain open for future governments even if the present one can not deliver on its people’s wishes.
More details
Negotiating away a unilateral right to leave the EU is the polar opposite to what the country voted for.
Further to this, it inhibits future governments from taking a different approach by vesting their power in the hands of the EU.
It must be enshrined in law that the UK must always retain a unilateral right to exit the EU in its entirety, including any backstop arrangements.

Why was this petition rejected?
It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.
We can't accept your petition because the backstop would only apply after the UK has left the EU. You might like to sign this petition instead, which calls for the UK to negotiate for a unilateral right to leave the backstop after it has left the EU:
