Rejected petition Abolish the SDLT surcharge anomaly for homebuyers.
In April 2016 an extra 3% stamp duty surcharge was applied to the purchase of ADDITIONAL properties.
However it is also unfairly penalising ordinary homebuyers who already own a property that is NOT their home.
More details
This was meant to tax landlords and developers however it is also unfairly penalising ordinary homebuyers.
If you already own a property that is a buy to let or own a property having assisted a family member such as a child or parent and you buy your OWN HOME, you will have to pay the additional stamp duty.
You do not however have to pay the surcharge if you are replacing your home.
As such I call on the Government to abolish this anomaly.
