Petition Stop the government from using NI to pay national debt.
In a Freedom of Information Act request on 22 December 2018, the Treasury had confirmed that NI contributions were 'in practise' being used to pay the national debt. This goes against the premise of NI Contributions being a rainy day fund for if people are unemployed, sick or unable to work.
More details
The money saved by not paying off the national debt could be used to help alleviate those in hardship with the changeover from Legacy Benefits to Universal Credit. Also the money saved could be used to give an increase across the board so that people can make ends meet as there has not been an increase in benefits to those out-of-work in the tax year 19/20 when prices in everyday life has increased and there is budgetary pressures on families putting them into poverty.
