Rejected petition We urge parliament to ask the EU to unilaterally extend Article 50

The government's action in proroguing parliament is limiting the time available for parliament to properly debate the future of this country's relationship with the European Union. The EU could unilaterally allow for Brexit to be suspended to allow parliament time to properly discuss this issue.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for.

We can't accept your petition because the UK Government and Parliament aren't solely responsible for the issue you raise. The extension of Article 50 needs to be agreed by both the UK and EU and cannot take place unilaterally.

In any case, the European Withdrawl (No. 2) Act 2019 was given Royal Assent on Monday 9 September, requiring the Government to seek an extension if a deal has not been agreed. You can find out more about the Act here:

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
