Petition Mandatory environmental damage warnings on tobacco products
Warnings on tobacco products to highlight their environmental impact to smokers should be added to those already present concerning the health impacts.
More details
One estimate is that 5% of global greenhouse emissions result from the deforestation caused by tobacco growing.
When grown as a cash crop, tobacco plants displace food crops more useful to the inhabitants of developing countries and artificially lower standards of living by raising food prices.
Dire health warnings of the long-term impacts of tobacco smoking carry little weight as the risks seem far in the future. Warnings of the immediate impacts lifestyle choices have on the environment and others may offer another avenue to reduce smoking.
