Rejected petition Make child maintenance a set figure per child per week.

Child maintenance is currently based on the other parents gross income. It should actually be calculated per child, their age, per week based on the costs of bringing up the child eg. clothes, food, nappies etc. The way they work it out now is too much of a persons income leaving them unable to live

More details

1 child is 12% of gross weekly income
2 children is 16% of gross weekly income
3+ children is 19% of gross weekly income
Is what it is calculated at, for how many children and how many nights the children sleep at the other parents house.
However many mothers don't let the children sleep at the fathers house often in order to keep their maintenance to the highest level- this is not fair. Some fathers have to pay for court to see the children. Mothers income should be taken into account too.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We're not sure exactly what you want child maintance to be a fixed amount regardless of income, or whether you would like the other parent's income to be considered as part of setting the amount.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
