Rejected petition Make Speaker John Bercow a member of the House of Lords in line with tradition.
Retiring speakers of the House of Commons are, by tradition, elevated to the House of Lords. John Bercow has long been a champion of back bench MPs and a defender of the sovereignty of Parliament. His wisdom and commitment to democracy would benefit the House of Lords and our society as a whole.
More details
Until 1983 retiring speakers were traditionally given a viscountcy, after which point life baronies have been granted. In January 2019 it was reported by the BBC that Speaker Bercow maybe denied a peerage: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-46913477 This would end a tradition going back over two centuries.
