This petition was submitted during the 2017–2019 Conservative government

Rejected petition Make the result of referenda in the United Kingdom legally binding.

We, the undersigned, believe that the sovereign body and power in the United Kingdom is the British people themselves and that their will MUST be upheld even when expressed via the results of referenda.

More details

We further believe that parliamentarians are using the “advisory” status of referenda in the United Kingdom to ignore the democratically-expressed will of the majority of voters via the European Union Referendum in 2016 based on the supposition that this would violate the principle of parliamentary sovereignty.

We therefore demand that the government should introduce primary legislation at the earliest opportunity to make the result of ALL referenda legally binding on the government.
