The UK faces an obesity crisis. This places strain upon the NHS and misallocates resources better used elsewhere. Providing people with affordable access to sports equipment would provide both health and social benefits, by encouraging people to exercise and meet others.

With the London Olympics nearly upon us the Government should take this opportunity to galvanise the country around sport and healthy living.

The Treasury has already shown itself to be willing to reduce VAT on bikes for the cycle to work scheme. Why not extend this to everyone?
