Rejected petition Abolish the London Mayoralty and the Greater London Authority?

Have the powers devolved to the Mayor & Greater London Authority abolished with their functions assumed by a mix of: a Cabinet minister responsible for London, local authorities, other central government departments, and a professional board of appointed to manage TfL and the police

More details

It is within the right of Parliament to withdraw devolved powers to the London Mayor and the Greater London Authority (GLA) so that the most important tasks of these offices can be held with greater accountability. The Mayoralty and the GLA are an expensive and superfluous layer of government that provides little value for taxpayers. The GLA introduced a 9% increase in taxes in 2019, without any discernible improvement in any key areas, such as transport, housing and crime.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for.

We can't accept your petition because the UK Government and Parliament aren't responsible for the issue you raise. While Parliament could legislate to abolish the Mayor of London and the GLA, the office was created by a referendum in London and so would need the consent of the people of London for it to be abolished.

You could start a petition calling for the Government to hold a referendum on the future of the Greater London Authority if that's something you'd like to see happen.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
