Rejected petition Landlords should be required to reduce rent costs during the COVID-19 outbreak

I would like the government to pass legislation which would require all landlords throughout the United Kingdom to reduce the rent costs for individuals and families during the peak period of the COVID-19 pandemic.

More details

In order to help ease pressure on individuals and their families during the COVID-19 pandemic, the cost of rent should be reduced to allow people to save money should their working hours be reduced. This will allow them to continue to cover any living costs in the event their
workplace also closes. Likewise, for families where multiple occupants may suffer a reduction in income, this will help ease some financial pressure. This applies especially to those who are unable to work from home.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.

We understand that you want the Government to reduce rent costs during the coronavirus outbreak, but it's not clear exactly what action you want the Government to take to achieve this.

You could start a new petition more clearly stating what you want the Government to do, for instance to limit the maximum rent that can be charged for a residential property.

We have published a petition calling on the Government to encourage lenders, landlords and utilities to freeze payments during lockdown, which you might like to sign: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/302256

We have also published several petitions calling on the Government to provide financial support to people whose incomes are affected by the coronavirus outbreak. You can find these on our website: https://petition.parliament.uk/
