Rejected petition Stop the payment of final rent instalments for all University accommodation

Many university accommodations are still asking for the payment for the final rent instalment despite universities strongly suggesting all students move back home. Due to this lockdown period it also prevents us moving back in, therefore paying unnecessary rent.

More details

Many student loans do not cover the whole payments of rents and through many parents and students losing their jobs, becoming furloughed or lack of business due to being self-employed it is unfair to request this full payment at this time. Also only a few accommodation companies are cancelling payments, therefore making it unfair on those who aren’t.

This petition was rejected

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for.

Suspending payments for rent or ending a tenancy early is a matter for individual landlords, and not the UK Government or Parliament.

The Government has published an FAQ for university students on Covid-19, which includes advice on accommodation costs: https://dfemedia.blog.gov.uk/2020/04/09/university-students-covid19-faq/
