Rejected petition Award the NHS a George Cross

South Lanarkshire Liberal Democrats call for our NHS to be awarded the George Cross - Britain's highest civilian honour for gallantry.
The George Cross should be awarded collectively to the NHS to recognise the heroic work done by them during the coronavirus crisis.

More details

Undoubtedly there are issues about the national response to the crisis, about NHS funding and pay and above all about the slow pace of testing and supply of masks and other protective equipment. And there are many other people – carers, shopworkers, police and many others who have bravely supported us all through these difficult times. a George Cross to the service would be entirely right and would also mark the special affection the people of our country have for the NHS.

This petition was rejected

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for.

We cannot accept petitions that call for specific awards or honours, such as the George Cross, to be given to individuals or organisations, because we can only accept petitions about matters for which the Government or Parliament are responsible for.

There is an independent process for considering nominations for awards and honours, including the George Cross, and advising the Queen on granting these, so it is not something the Government or Parliament can do.

Information about Civilian gallantry is available here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/civilian-gallantry-operation#the-george-cross-committee
