Rejected petition Prevent lowering the age of treatment for transgender people.

Liz Truss has revealed that she wants to review the Gender Recognition Act and change the age of treatment for transgender youth and individuals.

Currently, only people aged 18 or over undergo any surgeries or ‘sex changes’ and only people aged 16 or over are prescribed cross-sex hormones.

More details

Minors (under 16) only receive hormone blockers which put a pause on puberty and are reversible. Puberty is not reversible and can cause distress and dysphoria to transgender youth, which may even see an increase in suicides within this group.

Lowering the age that transgender youth can receive professional, medical advice and treatment will have detrimental effects while allowing them treatment will continue to be beneficial.
