Electrification is designed to encourage further transfer of freight to rail along this important corridor via Ely and Peterborough. This will enable electrically hauled trains to travel directly to the Midlands, North and Scotland without going via London cutting transit times. A secondary objective is to provide a diversionary route, via Ely and Cambridge, for the East Coast mainline
