Private security guards should be able to use the same protection as Police officers. Trained right this shouldn't be a problem. In fact Private Security Operatives do a similar job to the police. We deal with violent and dangerous people everyday in our line of work. So why shouldn't we be able to protect ourselves and other members of the public.
