I believe energy providers deliberately obscure the true rate they are charging consumers in order to make excess profits and prevent proper competition between providers.

Due to a combination of set annual charges, direct debit discounts, dual-fuel discounts, and higher and lower rates per unit of energy it is virtually impossible to compare tariffs.

I believe a simple piece of legislation which required a single flat rate for electricity and a single flat rate for gas - which would prevent companies from applying annual charges, discounts, or different level tariffs depending on the level of consumption - would vastly increase competition between providers and ultimately lead to lower prices for consumers.
